Angelina College's Lady Roadrunners entered Saturday's doubleheader with the 7th-ranked San Jacinto Lady Coyotes knowing they had to win both games to keep alive any hopes of a post-season berth.
After dropping a 1-0 heartbreaker in the opener, thereby eliminating AC from playoff contention, the Lady 'Runners really had nothing on the line heading into the nightcap.
That didn't stop AC from ending the season on the highest of high notes.
Jordan Garza's solo homer in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Lady Roadrunners a walk-off, 6-5 win in the team's season finale.
One of the seven freshmen starting for AC all season, Garza launched a one-out drive deep to center field with the game tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh. San Jacinto centerfielder Candyce Carter nearly made a spectacular catch at the wall, going high to get a glove on the ball – only to see it pop out of her glove, bounce on the top of the fence twice and fall over to give AC a win in its final game of the season.
Garza's heroics were just part of two solid games put forth by Angelina College. Laura Martinez singled twice and drove in two runs; Emily Ramsey drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk, adding a single in the fifth; Hannah Coker drove in a run with a 1st-inning single; and Raegan Sampson finished the day with four hits in four at-bats.
Shelby Phillips picked up the win on the mound, holding the high-powered Lady Coyotes to two runs over the first five innings before allowing runs in the sixth and seventh. San Jacinto scored twice in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5, with D.J. Hooks and Ashley Noak driving in runs.
Saturday was also Sophomore Day for the Lady 'Runners, as the team said its farewells to Hailey Peet, Shelby Wallace and Taylor Brookshire. Those three combined for four hits and two RBIs in their final game in Angelina College uniforms.
The opener turned out to be a beauty of a pitching duel. San Jac's Alexis Estrada and AC's Taylor Thompson battled for the full seven innings, with the Lady Coyotes scoring the only run of the game on a third-inning wild pitch. Estrada eventually won the battle by allowing just two Lady Roadrunner hits, both singles by Martinez and Courtney Robbins.
Despite missing out on the conference tournament, the Lady Roadrunners still managed to finish the season with a winning record, closing out the 2012 campaign with a record of 21-17.
Roadrunner Baseball Teams Sees Playoff Hopes Die in Alvin
Making the conference tournament was going to be a long shot for the Angelina College Roadrunner baseball team. Heading into the final week of the season, the 'Runners needed to win each of their final five games to have a shot at a post-season berth.
Alvin's Dolphins ended the suspense on Saturday, blasting four homers to take the nightcap by a 13-1 score. This after AC won the opener 9-2 behind Matt Roberts' pitching efforts.
