(RNN) - President Obama "slow jammed the news" during his first appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday evening.

Taped on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Obama and Fallon talked about student loans while the Roots, Fallon's house band, produced a R&B beat.

The president played it straight while Fallon provided the humor.

Following the music segment, the interview took a serious turn on the issue of rising interest rates on student loans.

Obama said on July 1, 2012, the interest rate on Stafford student loans are set to increase unless congress acts.

"The single most important investment young people can make remains a college education," Obama said. "The challenge is, it's getting more and more expensive."

Obama said that he and Michelle Obama financed their college and law school educations through student loans and recently finished paying for them.

"We didn't finish paying off student loans until eight years ago. And now I'm President of the United States. So it worked out," he added.

Later in the interview, Fallon asked Obama if he knew Mitt Romney.

"I've met him, but we're not friends," Obama replied, with laughter from the audience.

When asked about the Secret Service scandal Obama said, "The Secret Service, these guys are incredible. They protect me, they protect Michelle, they protect our girls, they protect our officials all around the world. Ninety-nine point nine percent of them, every day, they're putting their life on the line, they do a great job. So, a couple of knuckleheads shouldn't detract from that they do. What these guys were thinking, I don't know. That's why they're not there anymore."

The interview was taped on Tuesday afternoon at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where President Obama had given a speech earlier on lowing student loan rates.
