From the First United Methodist Church of Longview:

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - Jack Matkin, senior pastor of First United Methodist Church of Longview, was arrested in Smith County for driving while intoxicated on the evening of Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

At this time, he is at home with his family.

The Bishop of the Texas Annual Conference, Janice Riggle Huie, has suspended him for up to 90 days. He will not perform any ministerial duties during that time.

During his suspension, the activities of the church will continue under the direction of the associate pastors, Rhett Ansley and Mike Schutz.

This past Sunday, the district superintendent, Rev. Bill Taylor, preached at the 8:30 a.m. and the 10:50 a.m. service.  Rev. Ansley conducted the contemporary service at 8:50 a.m.

The district superintendent, the Conference and the church staff are working very closely to assure that First United Methodist Church continues to serve its members and the Longview community throughout this difficult period.

There are plans in place for support counseling for church members who request those services.  We ask for prayers for Rev. Matkin, his family, our church and our leaders that we may serve God and listen for His direction to guide us.
