Prickly situation for 8-week-old AZ pup

Posted: Updated:

An 8-week-old puppy found himself in a prickly situation Sunday, but now "Cactus Jack" is showing a lot of spine and has a new family.

Dozens of people turned out today at the Arizona Humane society to adopt the pup.  Everyone's name was put into a drawing and the lucky winner is a woman named Sara.

Last weekend a passer-by heard the painful cries from the puppy, who was stuck in a Cholla cactus and unable to move, according to Bretta Nelson of the Arizona Humane Society.

The passer-by-turned-Good Samaritan pulled the puppy from the cactus and removed enough of the Cholla's spines to almost fill half a 5-pound bucket before EAMTs from the Humane Society arrived, Nelson said.

The puppy was taken to the ASH's Second Chance Animal Hospital, where the remaining spines were removed and he was treated so his wounds wouldn't become infected, Nelson said. Nelson said the pup's spirits were high throughout his treatment.

Cactus Jack is a Yorkie/terrier mix.
