As we turn the calendar to May next week, we will be one month away from the start of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season.
May is always a busy month when it comes to hurricane preparedness, planning, and looking ahead to just how active or not the particular hurricane season will be.
I will be attending two hurricane preparedness workshops over the next couple of weeks. They will be put on by the local Red Cross chapters here in both Lufkin and Nacogdoches.
Schedule of Events
The first Red Cross Shelter Meeting will be held next Friday, May 4th, at Noon in Nacogdoches at the First Christian Church on North Mound St. To R.S.V.P., you can contact the Red Cross office at 936-564-2101.
The second Red Cross Shelter Meeting will be the following week on Tuesday, May 8th. This one will be in Lufkin at Noon at the Carpenter's Way Baptist Church. To R.S.V.P. for this seminar, you can call 936-634-6013.
If you are a Red Cross volunteer or someone who works with emergency management coordinators, you may want to make a note of these two meetings.
We will have several local and county officials on hand to talk about the plans that will be put in place in case a land falling tropical storm or hurricane were to affect the upper Texas coast.
I will also be giving a brief presentation recapping what we saw last year and looking ahead to what we are expecting this upcoming season in the Atlantic basin.
