NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Youth flag football leagues are growing across the country, including right here in East Texas. Many parents see flag football as a safer alternative to tackle football and in Nacogdoches there is a flag football league that now competes on a national level.
The Nacogdoches league offers three different age groups for kids from ages 4 to 14. Derrick Sterns started the league 5 years ago because he saw flag football as a way for his kids to develop their skills without contact.
"A lot of kids aren't ready for that contact, that helmet to helmet stuff, and you hear about all the incidents where kids get hurt out there," said Sterns. "This is a safer alternative because it is non contact. The kids can work on footwork, route running, back pedaling and defensive skills."
This weekend, April 29th and 30th, the flag football league will host an adult two-day tournament to raise funds for their regional trip to Austin.
"All proceeds are going towards paying for the kids trip when we take two all-star teams to Austin," said Sterns. "If they advance from that then we will go to Florida for nationals later this summer."
