LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Lufkin man who organized an anti-violence campaign over the weekend is now in jail on a violence-related charge.

Kahil Gibran Smith, 26, who held the "Silence the Violence" march in North Lufkin as a way to speak out against violence, is accused of striking his four-year-old son in the ear with a belt.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, an officer was dispatched to the 1400 block of Tulane Drive  and spoke to a woman who said Smith, who is her husband, "whooped" her son and while doing so struck him in the ear. The officer noticed the right ear was swollen and took pictures of it.

While the officer was investigating the incident, Smith came home. The officer spoke to Smith, who said he was "whooping" his son when he accidentally hit him in the ear.

The officer said he understood and began talking to him about the "Silence the Violence" march coming up. The officer then took the camera and statement and left.

Police used the photographs, statement and Smith's admission to what happened to arrest Smith on a charge of injury to a child on Monday.

Smith has been booked in the Angelina County Jail several times, dating back to 2003. Charges include theft, burglary and aggravated assault.
