Why this year could bring the most traffic tickets in state history

ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Law enforcement are preparing to issue more citations than ever before in this year's "click it or ticket" campaign. The campaign kicked off yesterday and runs through June 3, 2012.

Drivers caught without a seatbelt could face fines ranging from $25 to $250.

Officials say buckling up reduces the risk of death by 45 percent for those riding in a car and 60 percent for those riding in a pickup.

"We just like to make everyone aware that everyone in a vehicle must be secured by a safety belt, whether it be in the front seat or the back. And also, for our children, we want everybody to know if you're younger than eight and less than four foot nine inches tall, they must be secured in a child's safety seat system," says David Hendry, the DPS spokesperson.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates seatbelt usage over the past ten years has resulted in nearly 3-thousand fewer traffic deaths.
