Angelina County Sheriff race overview

ANGELINA CO., (KTRE) – Will Angelina County voters choose the insider or the retired DPS trooper for sheriff?  Both republican candidates are promising change.

Retired DPS trooper Greg Sanches says it is time to move the Angelina County Sheriff's department into the 21st century.  Sanches says that can only be done by electing someone who does not have direct ties to the current administration.  He says his extensive public service and criminal justice record has equipped him for the job.  He wants to update the department's resources and equipment and improve fiscal responsibility while protecting the citizens of Angelina County.

Sanches is running against Allen Hill who is a captain for the sheriff's department and heads up its narcotics division.  Hill says his comprehensive law enforcement experience makes him more aware of the internal changes needed for fiscal responsibility, drug prevention, education and enforcement, increase patrols and improving the department's image.  He wants to return accountability and strong leadership to the sheriff's office.

The winner of the Republican Primary will then face Jim Hodges who is running unopposed in the Democratic Primary.

Early voting in the May 29 Primary begins May 14 and runs through May 25.  The Primary Election is May 29.  The General Election is November 6
