Three arrested in Smith County sex offender sweep

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Lt. Tony Dana of the Smith County Sheriff's Department said three sex offenders were arrested during a bi-annual Smith County compliancy sweep.

Authorities said they arrested two sex offenders for nonpayment of child support and one was arrested for possession of a firearm.

Dana said authorities were deployed last Friday at 6 a.m. within the county to visit sex offenders' residences.

According to authorities, there are 264 registered sex offenders outside the city limits in Smith County.

The sweep revealed that 192 of those offenders are in compliance, 16 have non-compliance issues, and 46 could not be contacted at their residencies. Eight of the 264 sex offenders were already in custody for noncompliance issues. 

Authorities said they are doing a follow up with the sixteen who were not in compliance as well as the 46 that could not be contacted. 

The Smith County Sheriff's Department were assisted by Tyler Police Department, U.S. Marshals' Service Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force, Immigration Customs and Smith County Constables.
