'Swamp People' cast member dies of natural causes

Mitchell Guist Mitchell Guist

The coroner said Mitchell Guist, a star of the reality television show "Swamp People," died of natural causes.

"There was no suspicious cause, no accidents," said Dr. John Fraiche, Ascension Parish coroner.  "It did not appear to be an accidental death."

Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack said Guist, 47, was working to build a houseboat when he appeared to have a seizure and fell backwards in his boat.

CNN reported Guist was with another person along the Belle River in St. Martin Parish at the time of his collapse. The news organization said that person got Guist back to a boat landing, performed CPR and called his wife, who in turn called 911.

Waguespack said it appeared Guist had some sort of seizure, but it is uncertain if the seizure was caused from the fall or something else health related.

Guist was taken to Teche Regional Hospital in Morgan City, where he was pronounced dead.

"Swamp People," on History Channel TV, features residents of Louisiana's Atchafalaya swamp country during alligator hunting season.

Guist appeared on the show alongside his brother, Glenn Guist. Mitchell and Glenn lived together in the house they were born in. Neither had ever married.
