NB Hwy 271 open again, according to DPS

Posted: Updated:
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

DPS has alerted us that Highway 271 is now re-open to traffic. The skid has been removed from the roadway.

Northbound traffic on Highway 271 in Smith County was shut down, due to an accident involving an 18-wheeler.

According to a DPS trooper on the scene, an 18-wheeler carrying a large metal beam, called a skid, was headed northbound on Highway 271, when he struck the Interstate 20 overpass.

The skid fell off of the trailer and into the roadway. It's currently blocking all northbound lanes at the intersection of Hwy 271 and I-20.

Authorities expect the scene to be cleared by 3:30.

The trooper on the scene says the driver was supposed to take a route around the bridge, by entering and exiting I-20.

The skid was manufactured by Tyler Steel, and is for use in the oil field. .

TxDOT has assessed the damage to the overpass, and has declared it safe for travel.

We have a crew en route and will post more info as soon as it's available.
