LEGGETT, TX (KTRE) -

A second fatal accident in as many days in Polk County has killed three people Wednesday afternoon.

DPS spokesman Trooper David Hendry said an 18-wheeler was northbound and trying to turn left on Loop 116 in Leggett when it was hit by a four-door Buick.

Hendry said both vehicles caught on fire. The driver of the 18-wheeler escaped the fire and reportedly tried to help the people in the car but the fire prevented him from doing so.

All three in the car are dead. The driver was Deonta Lashard Wyatt, of Livingston, and the passengers were Connie Ray Burch and Anita Burch of Leggett.

Around 9:00 p.m., TxDOT reported the right southbound lane of U.S. 59 had reopened after being shut down for several hours.
