CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

One child is dead and another injured after being struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon.

Just before 1 p.m. Thursday, fire, EMS and a medical helicopter were dispatched to the scene off CR 2741 in Cherokee County near the city of Wells.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Patrol Deputy WR Blake initially reported the two boys, brothers David Jr, 12, and Davion Stone, 6, ran into the roadway, however, authorities now say the boys were riding a motorized scooter when they were struck by a northbound Honda Accord.

David died on the scene. Officials with East Texas Medical Center say Davion was taken by helicopter to a hospital.

Witnesses say the car was driving at a high speed through the neighborhood, but officers investigating the accident says at this time, they don't believe speed is a factor. However, authorities warn that all motorists driving through residential areas should watch their speed and slow down if they see kids in the roadway.

CR 2741, also known as Preston Road, is off of Highway 69.

A State Trooper on the scene says the driver of the Accord does not have a license, registration, or current vehicle inspection. The driver is currently being held in a patrol car while investigators canvas the scene.
