SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Shelby County officials have charged a Louisiana man after he allegedly tried to break into a residence on State Highway 7 East before getting shot in the hand Friday night.

Sheriff Newton Johnson said Darith Khourn, who lives on the 5900 block of State Highway 7 East, reported that the suspect, Tiraous Tyrome Howard, 31, of Mansfield, La., knocked on the door and that Khourn could not understand what he was saying and then Howard pulled a gun and pointed it at him. That is when Khourn's father, Thay Khourn, pulled him out of the way and shot through the door.

Howard fled the scene and was later found at the emergency room in Mansfield, according to Johnson. Desoto Parish authorities arrested him and held him in their jail until deputies from Shelby County on Monday arrived to transfer him back to Texas.

Johnson said Howard suffered a gunshot to the hand and had the bullet removed at a Shreveport hospital on Sunday.

Johnson said Howard did admit to being at the residence on Friday.
