ETX homeowners on alert after break-ins

Posted: Updated:
RUSK COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Some East Texas homeowners are now armed and on the lookout after burglars burst through doors in their neighborhood.

About half a dozen burglaries and attempted burglaries have happened in the past two weeks in the Laneville area of Rusk County on FM 839. We're told the burglars are targeting houses where no one appears to be home.

Homeowner Nancy Simmons says she believes the sound of her walker scared away the burglars.

"I walked as fast as I could over there because I knew it was locked," said Simmons. "I got to the door and looked at it and all I seen was just the tailgate of the pick up and it was tan looking."

Sunday, her husband repaired the damaged door.

A few miles away, Bob Compton checked on his sister's home that was broken into last week.
The burglars caused about $700 in damage to her door. Her dog, Gus, wandered next door to alert that something was wrong.

"They got a few things out of her closet and I think some checkbooks," said Compton.

Now, homeowners in the area say they're taking more precautions. Neighbor Don Mills says he has two burglar deterrents.

"My 180 lb. dog Spirit, and I've got a lot more ammunition," said Mills.

Since the break-ins, Simmons has been the only one at home. She hates to think about what could have happened, had she come face to face with the burglars.

"I'm lucky to be here," she said.

Neighbors continue to watch out for each other until the culprits are caught and the break-ins stop.
