ZAVALLA, TX (KTRE) -

The mayor of Zavalla confirmed Monday that he has demoted the town's police chief.

Davis says he demoted Joey Courtney due to necessary improvements that need to be made in the police department.

Courtney was named police chief in August 2011 by the Zavalla City Council during former Mayor Greg Fletcher's term in office. Prior to the appointment, Courtney was with the Zavalla Police Department for eight years as a lieutenant.

Mayor Davis would not comment further on the demotion at this time. He says he is currently working to schedule a meeting with the city council regarding this decision.
