ETX Police Academy instructor dies in motorcycle crash

A longtime instructor at the East Texas Police Academy was killed Wednesday morning in a motorcycle crash.

The wreck happened at the intersection of Highway 31 and Interstate 20 in Kilgore, around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Those who knew instructor Leslie Ferguson say he was a blessing to the law enforcement community.

"It's going to be hard, very hard to move on without him, going to be a big void," said Mike Fennell, East Texas Fire Academy Instructor.

Many people who knew Les Ferguson were the first responders at his crash. Ferguson's motorcycle somehow collided with a SUV. He was on his way to teach at the East Texas Police Academy in Kilgore.
"That's where Les parked his bike," said Fennell. "He'd always that pull that big old white Harley around jump off and come to class."
Covering a wall in the police academy are the names and faces Les impacted.

"He taught classes all over East Texas," said Fennell.

Fennell and Ferguson began teaching at the academy in 1989. Fennell says Ferguson stood out as an instructor.

"Les cared. Les was a man who made sure students learned what they had to learn. I had the privilege of sitting in one of the classes with him as a student years ago in an ATF bomb school and les made sure that you learned what you had to learn," he said.
He says they were like family, even joked like brothers.

"You  know how police officers like donuts?" Fennell said as he smiled. "Les would say that  donuts were power rings. I'm going to think about Les the next time I eat a donut."

As Fennell grieves for his friend, he remembers all the lives Ferguson shaped.
