2012 has been a busy year at Mardel Christian Education in Longview. Since January, the store has been holding Bible drives, benefiting the people who need them most. And it all started with this one; the Beautiful Everyday Bible.
Store manager Sam Madewell tells us "Those are Bibles that are designed to go to ladies, young ladies that are going through unplanned pregnancies. We hit centers here in Longview, Tyler, and then we hit Shreveport, Nacogdoches, Paris, and those centers provided them to other centers in their area as well."
Madewell says more than 2000 Bibles were collected in the month of January alone. But that wasn't enough.
He says "We didn't want to stop there. We didn't want to be another drive, just another thing, just to do it one-time because we were asked to do it. After that we started working on our Operation Worship Bibles, which are Bibles again designed to military men and women throughout the nation."
The Operation Worship Bibles are outfitted with the colors of all the branches of the U.S. Military. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.
They go to bases right before deployment, and are designed not only impact the soldier, but to be left with someone where they served, so they too can be touched. And this summer, Mardel began its third drive called Bibles for Ghana.
Madewell says, "The president and first lady of Ghana are newly-elected Christians and they would like every single high school student in their country to own a bible. They're trying to raise 500,000 bibles and they're asking for help from all the Christian retailers including us, Lifeway and others to try to help them reach that goal.
The generosity of East Texans has spread from local communities, to the nation and now the world.
