(RNN) - Friends and family of George Zimmerman have relaunched a once-defunct fundraising website for the neighborhood watch captain in the interest of disputing "misinformation" they say has spread in the media.

"Rumors and lies are rampant on the internet," the group said in a statement on TheRealGeorgeZimmerman.com. "This website is dedicated to providing a voice for George Zimmerman."

They have also started a Twitter account to share information and thank supporters.

Attorneys for Zimmerman confirmed the website is backed by the 28-year-old Zimmerman, who admitted to shooting and killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

In a message posted to the website, Zimmerman thanked supporters for their donations, prayers and words of encouragement,.

"This has been the most difficult time of my life," he wrote. "I am not a murderer, and I am not a racist."

"I want to set the record straight about some things. I created this website to give me, the real George Zimmerman, a place to do that."

He also asked for more donations to shore up his legal defense fund.

"I have had no other means of generating income for five months, let alone pay the enormous expenses surrounding this case," he wrote. "The fund has been devastated by the need to pay $100,000 to a bondsman and almost $50,000 in security expenses.

"The skyrocketing legal costs have gone unpaid. The defense fund is at its lowest point since it's inception; in fact, with outstanding expenses yet unpaid, the fund is near depletion."

The letter is signed "Your Friend, George."

TheRealGeorgeZimmerman.com was launched by in April as a way to insert Zimmerman's voice into the national coverage of the case against him and clear up what he calls erroneous information as it came out.

It was also used to solicit funds for his legal defense fund.

In April, Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, told a Florida court his client had raised more than $200,000 from the website.

Zimmerman hadn't disclosed that he had such financial resources at a bond hearing earlier that month. At a second bond hearing on July 5, Zimmerman's bail was raised from $100,000 to $1 million.

The Zimmerman camp has since filed papers to disqualify the trial's judge, calling the order "harsh and morally indignant."

Prosecutors called the request "absurd."

Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for the death of Martin, although he has maintained that he acted in self-defense.

If convicted, he could face life in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.
