Chase suspect captured in Lake Palestine

A traffic stop tonight turned into a chase and ended with the suspect in a lake.

The Smith County Sheriff's Office says they were making a traffic stop on Cooper Road, near Highway 155 South, around 5:45 tonight when the suspect led them on a chase by foot into the Malibu Bay subdivision.

And 45 minutes later, Smith County Sheriff's officials were pulling their suspect out of Lake Palestine.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was armed with a small pocket knife; he ran to Elm Lane and entered the home of Bob Bradley.

"I was in my office and my wife got on the intercom called me and said somebody had walked into the house," Bradley said. "And she mentioned she was going to get her husband and he ran."

Bradley said he followed the suspect outside.

"I saw him running in my neighbor's yard, so I went over there. By that time the other neighbor came out, and before long the whole neighborhood was after him," Bradley said.

The suspect led them to Big Oak Drive, where he jumped a fence and jumped into the lake.

"Three officers, I believe three officers, went in after him and also the canine went in too," Bradley said.

But after he was captured, the drama still wasn't over. While he was being transported away from the scene, the suspect reportedly kicked in a window of the truck he was in. Authorities stopped once again to move him to a van, where he was transferred to the Smith County Jail.

Authorities say the suspect will be charged with aggravated assault against a peace officer, evading on foot, and resisting arrest.

Other charges are pending.
