NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

The new Nacogdoches Police K-9 team has made its first major drug seizure.

Officer Brian Eggebrecht, with his partner, Hanna, arrested two out-of-towners allegedly caught with 50 pounds of marijuana in their vehicle early Thursday.

According to the police report, Eggebrecht conducted a traffic stop at 3:48 a.m. in the 2800 block of Northwest Stallings Drive on a 2007 Chevy Impala for speeding. Eggebrecht reported both occupants were nervous and gave inconsistent statements about their travel plans. He also reported detecting a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Eggebrecht used probable cause to search the vehicle and reported finding about 50 pounds of marijuana.

He arrested Edgar Lopez, 25, of Channelview, and Veronica Hagburg, 21, of Houston. They are charged with third-degree possession of marijuana.
