Tuesday night the SFA volleyball players reported for camp. It was a calm night of checking into their rooms and then taking part in the 'welcome back' dinner. Wednesday was not as calm. The Ladyjacks got back to work early Wednesday morning and again that afternoon for their first day of two-a-day workouts.
Veteran coach Debbie Humphreys, in her 25th season with SFA volleyball, says this group of girls is already showing leadership.
"It's not a question of are they going to lead, they have already been doing that in the spring, now it's time for them to show it during the fall," said Humphreys. "I love the team chemistry and I love the leadership, and having solid leadership is very important to how successful we will be."
The team returns 9 players and is welcoming in 6 freshman. That group will look to improve on the 14-18 record from 2011. Not only are they looking to get back to a winning record, Humphreys believes this is the year SFA will be back in the Southland Conference championship conversation.
"I expect this group to figure out how to do that, how to compete in conference on a high level," said Humphreys. "With 9 returning players, 6 solid newcomers, we are really excited. This is the year SFA volleyball will be back in the hunt."
The Ladyjacks open up their season on the road at a UT-Arlington hosted tournament. In fact, only 1 of their first 9 matches will be at Shelton Gym in Nacogdoches.
You can watch their first home match on August 28th at 6:30 p.m. against Louisiana-Monroe.
