Car wrapping scam exposed, FBI investigating

Posted: Updated:
SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ (CBS5) -

An Oracle woman said her company has become the victim of a scam.

Scammers were trying to pay people off with fake checks on behalf of her company for something they don't even do, according to a Pinal County Sheriff's Office report.

You've seen cars on the roads wrapped with company logos. Some are completely covered. A San Tan Valley man was almost tricked into becoming a moving billboard for a company that doesn't even advertise like that.

A quick Google search on "car wrapping services" nets a list of many legit businesses.

A man almost became a victim to scammers after he saw an ad on Craig's List, according to the documents.

"We see companies now that are doing all types of unique advertising, so why not have someone wrap their car?" said Felicia Thompson with the Better Business Bureau.

The would-be victim was to have his vehicle wrapped with an advertisement for Oracle Land and Homes based in Oracle, AZ, according to the PCSO report. He got a check for $1,910, which he was supposed to cash and keep $300. He was supposed to mail the rest to an address in Colorado. He became suspicious and called Oracle Land and Homes to check it out.

The company owner said it was a scam.

"They somehow had access to what our checks looked like and counterfeited them. We had to close the account. Business checks are not cheap," said owner Helen Vinson.

"Craigslist itself is not a scam site by any means, but it's when people use the site for mischievous ways to lure people and to mislead them that's what you have to watch out for," Thompson cautioned.

The BBB recommends looking into the company you would be advertising for to make sure it's legit, and if something isn't right to hold off.

Vinson said thankfully no money was stolen from her. The FBI is now investigating.
