PHOENIX (CBS5) -
At first glance, little Kylee appears to be a beautiful and loving dog.
"I fell in love with her face. She gives kisses when she feels better," Kylee's owner, Pam Linyard said.
But Kylee hasn't been feeling well for quite a while.
After getting spayed at the pound, she suddenly stopped eating. Her breathing became labored and she lost so much weight that you could see her ribs through her fur.
"She would have died, she was getting that close," Linyard said.
Linyard has been unemployed for nearly a year, and had no money to get Kylee the treatment she desperately needed.
On a whim, she reached out to a local rescue and that's exactly what she got.
"She saved us both, I mean, she saved (Kylee's) life, and by talking through things to keep me up and not depressed," said Linyard.
Linyard is talking about Danya Leshick, who runs Where Wolf Rescue.
Leshick counseled Linyard, and even paid for Kylee's initial medical treatment.
They met for the very first time at Sun City West Animal Clinic, where Linyard unveiled a surprise.
"Danya, on behalf of Kylee and me, with all your help with the medical and your support, Channel 5 and I are going to pay it forward, so for Kylee and me, here's $500," said Linyard when Leshick walked into the exam room.
"Wow, thank you very much," replied Leshick as the two embraced.
Danya's gratefulness is understandably tempered by the fact that Kylee is still not out of the woods.
"Is she coughing a lot?" Dr. Joshua Winston said. He performed X-rays that confirmed his diagnosis. Kylee has inhalation pneumonia and is still very sick.
"What we need to do is put the poor thing in the hospital," Dr. Winston told the pair.
With a little luck, Kylee will pull through, but according to Linyard, she never would have made it this far without the devotion of Leshick, a perfect stranger.
"If everybody chipped in and committed a little bit of effort, because they wanted to, not because they have to, or were forced to, but because they wanted to lift up everybody around them, and make life better, the whole place would be a better place and things would start getting done," Leshick said.
After a few days in the hospital, Kylee's fever broke. She is eating again. And although she is still sick, she is doing much better.
