Gunman on the loose in ETX

Posted: Updated:

A gunman is on the loose who shot a 62-year-old store clerk in the face.

Palestine police tell KLTV, Fred Robinson was shot while working at Mr. D's convenience store in Palestine early Sunday morning. Amazingly, Robinson made it out alive.

KLTV has obtained the surveillance video from the crime, which police hope can put the shooter behind bars.

The security cameras pick up the unidentified man entering Mr. D's gas station around 2:30 a.m. The video shows a man wearing camouflage from head to toe, and carrying what police believe to be a .22 caliber rifle.

Robinson was working alone inside the store. The video shows Robinson being shot in the lower jaw. Afterward, the shooter took off down West Point Tap Road.

Sergeant James Muniz with the Palestine Police Department said officers canvassed the area for 30 to 45 minutes, but could not locate the suspect.

He said the police department released the surveillance video in homes someone will recognize the shooter.

KLTV edited around the actual moment where the shot is fired, but afterwards you can see Robinson on the ground as the suspect flees the scene on foot, which is not how he arrived.

Authorities said a truck dropped the shooter off behind the gas station. The suspect waited for about five minutes before going around the corner, passing a witness and then entering the side doors of the gas station to approach the clerk.

"We feel it's a two-tone Dodge Dakota from possibly the early to mid 90's," Muniz said.

Palestine authorities said they will meet with the crime lab next week to see if any enhancements can be made to the video to identify the license plate number for the getaway car. For now, they hope East Texans who see this might have some answers.

"If anybody recognizes the truck or the persons involved, we ask they call the Palestine Police Department or local crime stoppers and we'd appreciate it," Muniz said.

You can reach Crime Stoppers at 903-729-TIPS. Please remember you do not have to give your name, just your information. Crimes Stoppers can pay up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the offender.

Citizens with information can also call Sgt. James Muniz at 903-731-8477 or Detective Tommy Thacker at 903-731-8479.
