Mother accidentally struck, killed by daughter

BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) -

A Batavia single mother of two died Sunday when her daughter accidentally struck her with the family car.

The two had just attended church services in Newport and were in the church's parking lot when the tragedy occurred.

Following Sunday services at Newport Church of God on Keturah Street, 40-year-old Kim Riggs allowed her 15-year-old daughter to practice her driving skills in the parking lot. According to the family, the teen mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake and pinned her mother up against the fence.

"She couldn't speak but she could just barely breathe by holding her sternum," said Church of God pastor, Rusty Woolum. "We were trying to keep her calm, telling her that help was on the way, that we were there with her."

Riggs leaves behind two daughters and a grandson.

"She loved to go to that church over in Newport," said Riggs mother, Phyllis Daly.

So much so that Riggs would drive the 20 miles from Batavia just to attend its services.

"She loved her church. She loved the people. And she liked the family value in what comes with belonging to a church," said Woolum.

"I need help because I can't afford it by myself and my family. It's just hard," said Daly.

The family said it will take some time to recover from their tragic loss.

"We just miss her. I don't know how we can go on without her," said Daly.

Funeral services for Riggs will be held at Newport Church of God from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The burial will immediately follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Donations to the Kimberly Riggs Memorial Fund can be made at any PNC bank location.
