Texas Tech hands SFA soccer first loss of young season

FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas Tech's Janine Beckie scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute Friday evening to defeat the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team 1-0 at the TCU Invitational.

SFA (2-1) had hung in with the Red Raiders (3-0), one of the elite teams in the Big 12, and looked very much like the match would be settled in overtime until Beckie scored her second goal of the season off a deflection from Tiffini Smith in front of the box from just six yards away.

The Ladyjacks had an opportunity prior to Beckie's game-winner with one of their own when sophomore forward Chelsea Raymond broke through in the open field but was tripped up from behind by a Texas Tech defender.

However, no foul was called and the momentum shifted not five seconds later when, following a boot from Texas Tech goalkeeper Victoria Esson, the Red Raiders scored the game-winning goal.

"I was very proud of our team today," SFA head coach Tony Amato said. "Texas Tech is a good team and will do very well this season. But I thought we matched them in several aspects of the game and could have grabbed a goal. We showed we can play at a high level and we have to take that as a positive from the game."

Texas Tech outshot SFA 14-11 and 9-5 shots on goal. SFA was led by a team-high four shots from Laura Sadler. The Ladyjacks also got two shots a piece from Chelsea Raymond and Zuri Prince. Junior goalkeeper Lacey Lee allowed the one goal and made eight saves in falling to 2-1.

SFA fell to 0-4-1 all-time against Texas Tech with Friday being their second career one-goal loss.

The Ladyjacks will have a chance to get back in the win column this Sunday afternoon when they face TCU at 1:30 p.m.
