AP football rankings released, many deep East Texas teams listed

Posted: Updated:
LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

In less than a week high school football will begin across the state of Texas. This season several deep East Texas teams are expected to make great runs into the playoffs. It is still just the preseason, so team strength is based on numbers returning alone. But the AP has released their first rankings of the season.

Even though Lufkin is ranked (#20 in class 5A), coach Todd Quick does not want to pay attention to the rankings.

"We don't talk about it here," said Quick. "We know who can play the game and who can't, a piece of paper doesn't tell us that."

But this is the 21st century, information is readily available and Quick admitted his team probably knows where they stand. Still, he says that won't change their goals or expectations.

"I'm sure the kids know what the rankings are," said Quick. "But we know who the competition is going to be in our district race and that is our first goal, to win the district. So the rankings mean nothing."

Whether the players know it or not Lufkin is ranked and so are a couple of other teams on their schedule. Longview, Lufkin's week 3 opponent is sitting at 9. While the Woodlands, Lufkin's biggest district rival and week 6 opponent, comes into the season ranked 15th overall.

As far as the rest of deep East Texas no team in 4-A is ranked. Moving down to 3-A, Carthage is the lone representative for the viewing area at 3. In class 2-A Crockett begins the season at 14, while 1-A looks to be loaded. Tenaha is ranked 4, San Augustine 6, Alto 17 and Mount Enterprise 22. You can see the full AP rankings below.
