Nacogdoches United Way donors have chance at free car

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Auto dealership owner Rex Perry doesn't have to be taught much about the features of a new car.

"This is a 2013 Hyundai Accent, great gas mileage," said Perry as he walked around the bright blue car.

However, when an employee quizzed him on why employers should support United Way he was at a loss for words.

"Well, you know really, it's amazing for me from Nacogdoches, Texas; from growing up here all my life how little I knew about the United Way," confessed Perry.

After learning United Way depends on contributions to support twenty community non profits it wasn't long before Perry bought into the idea of "let's give a car away."

"Next thing you know, like most decisions I made my whole life, I went, alright," said Perry.

The decision could help put Nacogdoches County United Way over the top.

"Last year we went a little north of $300,000, so we think it's reasonable to think we can get within $325,000," said Gary Lee Ashcraft, Nacogdoches County United Way executive director. "And with the event of this car, which is kinda exciting, we may even surpass it. That's what we hope to do."

"The main reason I wanted to do something like this because people in East Texas have been good to support my business, my family's businesses," said Perry. "I grew up in the car business and folks here in East Texas have supported us, so I thought, you know, this is a pretty good way to give back."

Employees can give back by pledging $4 per week through payroll deduction to receive one chance at winning the car. Double the chance by pledging $6 per week. Cash donations of $208 or $312 annually gets your name in the pot too.

"They said if I could come up with something United Way blue that would be good and here it is," said Perry, proudly.

A lucky winner will be chosen on November 13 at Rex Perry Autoplex in Nacogdoches. The announcement was made at a morning United Way kickoff breakfast held at Fuzzy Tacos.
