Lufkin Police investigating rash of burglaries in west Lufkin

From Lufkin Police

LUFKIN, TX - Lufkin Police Department is investigating thirteen recent burglary and attempted burglary incidents which appear to be related. The incidents occurred between August 17 and 28, 2012, and between the hours of 7:30 PM and 11:00 PM.

The burglaries occurred, at residences located on Oleta Avenue, Hemlock Road, Shermell Street, River Oak Street, Brassell Street, Tom Temple Boulevard, and April Drive. Each incident involved forced entry, or attempted entry, into a residence and tampering with outdoor lighting or telephone lines.

The most recent incidents occurred around 9:00 PM last night at three residences located in the 100 block of April Drive. Two of the three residences were entered; one of was not occupied and the other was vacant. The third residence was occupied but entry was not made; the suspect fled when the resident turned on an exterior lamp in response to a noise on their back porch. A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter returning to Longview from a training exercise assisted Lufkin Police Department officers in searching the area for the suspect but the suspect was not found.

Four of the thirteen residences involved were occupied when burglarized. The victims in those incidents described the suspect as a tall, large, black male wearing dark-colored clothing. When the suspect encountered the victims, he fled from the residences.

The similarities of these burglaries and attempted burglaries are that the actor(s):
- approached the residences through the back yard, possibly scaling fences,
- entered, or attempted to enter, the residences by forcing open, possibly kicking, a rear entry door, and
- tampered with outdoor lighting, such as unscrewing the bulb of a motion-activated lamp, or pulled telephone lines from connection boxes on the exterior of the residences.

Anyone who believes their residence was burglarized or attempted to be burglarized but who has not yet reported the incident to law enforcement, is urged to immediately contact Lufkin Police Department at (936) 633-0356.

Anyone with information concerning these burglaries or the identity of the person(s) responsible for these burglaries can provide information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers of Lufkin at (936) 639-TIPS, or by submitting an anonymous tip at www.LufkinCrimeStoppers.com. Crime Stoppers Tipsters never have to give their name and Crime Stoppers may pay a cash reward of up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest related to these crimes.

More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
