CENTER, TX (KTRE) - A Center man pleaded guilty to killing his wife and son in October 2011, accepting a life without parole sentence during a plea hearing Wednesday.

Richard Vaughn Dean, 40, was facing the death penalty if he had let the case go to trial.

According to a previous report, Sheriff Newton Johnson said deputies were called to a property on State Highway 147, just outside of Shelbyville around 6 p.m. on Oct. 19.

When deputies arrived, they found Vicky Lynn Dean, 37, in a pickup, dead from an apparent shotgun wound to the face. Johnson said it appeared she was trying to leave the property.

Her son Christopher Reagan Smith, 20, was found dead in a small building outside the house, Johnson said.

Johnson said while deputies were on the scene, the San Augustine Sheriff's Department contacted them and said Dean's husband, Richard Dean, turned himself in and confessed to killing his wife and stepson.

Judge Guy Griffin approved the sentence.
