Name of Holly Lake drowning victim released

HOLLY LAKE RANCH, TX (KLTV) -

The name of the teenager who drowned while swimming across Holly Lake has been released. The young man was 16-year-old Austin Gaffney of Rowlett, and according to security at Holly Lake Ranch, he was from the Irving area and was visiting his grandmother.

The body of a missing teenager was recovered from the waters of Holly Lake on Sunday evening.

Officials say the teenage boy and a young woman both jumped into the north shore of the lake and attempted to swim to the south shore, which is about 200 yards. The female, Austin's sister,  got out on the south shore and looked behind to see that the boy had disappeared.

Officials arrived on the scene and began diving for the boy. Nearly three hours later, they discovered the boy's body.

"It was just a shock because you don't expect to come home , we were out in Tyler all day and you don't expect to come home and here about someone drowning, it makes you think twice before you do anything," said area resident Chelsea Havens.

The Holly Lake Volunteer Fire Department, DPS, Wood County Sheriff's Office and multiple other dive teams responded to the scene.

It is not yet clear what caused the boy to go under.
