TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

A man described as a family acquaintance is behind bars charged with capital murder in the death of a Texarkana 2-year-old.

Police say Dalton Slaten of Texarkana, Texas arrived at Wadley Hospital around 7 p.m. Friday with multiple injuries over his entire body. After initial treatment, the child was airlifted to Children's Hospital in LIttle Rock, where he was pronounced dead early Saturday morning.

Investigators say they've determined that the child had been in the custody of his babysitter in the 700 block of W. 26th Street in Texarkana, Texas since around 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Police say at some point between that time and 7 p.m., 32-year-old Jimmy Paul Mahone, took custody of the child. They say that in the early evening hours, the babysitter found the child crying while Mahone was holding him.

According to police, initial reports that the child had fallen from the porch proved to be false.

After being questioned by investigators, Mahone was arrested for capital murder. He was booked into the Bi-State Justice Center and is awaiting bond.

The child's body will be sent to Dallas for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the fourth homicide of the year for Texarkana, Texas.
