Officials contain grass fire in NE Smith County

Posted: Updated:
SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

A grass fire came dangerously close to about four East Texas homes Sunday afternoon.

The fire started near around 2 in the 10-thousand block of County Road 3102 near Winona.

No homes were evacuated, but firefighters were stationed near homes that were close to the fire. Firefighters sprayed down multiple homes as a precautionary measure. The fire torched around 10 acres.

"We had some pretty good fire, climbing trees and as you can tell, it jumped the road and we've basically had enough crews on the scene to stop it. People need to be very careful. Pay attention to the weather, pay attention to the humidity, know when it is the best time to burn and keep everybody around and watch it. Do not leave it unattended period, end of story," said Nelson Brumley, Chief of Winona Fire Department.
