Proud of East Texas: The Salt Palace

Posted: Updated:

By Joan Hallmark

Right in the middle of the Van Zandt County town of Grand Saline, sits the Salt Palace, the only building made of salt in the country and probably in the world. The first Salt Palace was built in Grand Saline in 1936 in the shape of the Alamo.

Because salt tends to melt, the buildings salt crystal blocks have been replaced in 1960, 1975, 1993 and this year in 2012.

Morton Salt Company has been mining in Grand Saline since 1931. They say they have enough salt to last another twenty thousand years.
