Lufkin woman makes free birthday cakes for kids in need

An East Texas woman says baking is her calling from God.

Debbie Coleman is founder and head baker for the Cake Angels Foundation, a non-profit organization she started last year that benefits children whose family may not be able to afford a birthday cake.

"I just went out and started going to different locations and different organizations: Goodwill, Salvation Army and the Family Crisis Center of East Texas. When I went in the places were so excited because places that had been making free cakes told them they wouldn't be doing it anymore," says Coleman.

Debbie started the Cake Angels Foundation last year as a way to give back to needy families in her community. Places, like the Family Crisis Center in East Texas, have received multiple cakes from Coleman.

"A lot of the kids have never had a birthday cake before. They never get presents, or gifts, let alone a birthday cake for their birthdays. So whenever the cakes come and moms come to pick the cakes up it's just amazing to see their faces," says Jamie West with the Family Crisis Center of East Texas.

"Their faces of excitement are worth more money than in the world," says Coleman.

Last year Coleman baked close to 200 hundred birthday cakes, and this year she's already at 250 cakes.

"We get hugs and kisses and that's our pay," says Coleman.
