Big waves swamp canoes at start of Molokai to Oahu race

HALE O LONO HARBOR, MOLOKAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - One woman was injured after large waves swamped several canoes at the start of the annual Na Wahine O Ke Kai women's canoe race from Molokai to Oahu.

Authorities said fire crews from the Hoolehua and Kaunakakai fire stations responded at about 7:45 a.m. to Hale O Lono Harbor to reports of five canoes swamped and 30 people in the water. The fire units arrived at 8:38 a.m., and found a total of ten canoes had been swamped.

The fire department said a 30-year-old Kailua woman from the Lanikai Canoe Club was injured after a large wave swamped their canoe. She complained of shoulder and rib pain, and was transported to shore and then taken by ambulance to Molokai General Hospital.

One boat was damaged by the waves, but the other nine canoes went on to start the race.
