New Fairfield man shoots, kills son during attempted burglary

NEW FAIRFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

State police are investigating a fatal shooting in New Fairfield where a teen was unknowingly shot and killed by his father after attempting to break into a home early Thursday morning.

State police said around 1 a.m., they were called to 7 Meetinghouse Hill Circle for a report of an attempted burglary and shots fired. According to police, a woman called her brother, Jeffrey Giuliano, who lived next door after telling him that she believed someone was trying to get into her home.

State police said Giuliano, who had a handgun, saw the person standing in front of the woman's house dressed in all black, wearing a black ski mask and armed with a weapon.

A confrontation occurred, state police said, during which the person came toward Giuliano in a threatening manner, still holding the object. Giuliano told police he believed the person was going to attack him, so he fired his gun, striking the person.

The person then immediately collapsed to the ground and died.

The police have identified the teen as Tyler Giuliano, 15, of New Fairfield, who is Jeffrey Giuliano's son.

"I can't believe it happened," said student Rob Cammarano. "We were in class when we found out. It was just sad."

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the manner and cause of death.

Connecticut State Police spent all Thursday gathering clues and interviewing witnesses. It's unclear why Tyler was trying to break into his aunt's house and why he had a small gun. The shooting remains under investigation.

Jeffrey Giuliano, who is a popular fifth-grade teacher, has not been charged with any crimes.

"Sounds like a big mistake," said former student Eric Mitchell. "I hope they're easy on him. He's a really nice guy."

The superintendent's office has confirmed that the high school media center will remain open until 9 p.m. for parents and students to gather.

The open house scheduled for the evening has been canceled, according to the superintendent's office.

"The kids are just finding out about this, the school are taking steps. They have grief counselors," said New Fairfield First Selectman John Hodge. "They're going to do everything they can to support the other kids."
