LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Some fortunate placement of Lufkin Police personnel led to the arrests of three people accused of stealing brass backflow preventers from two Lufkin businesses Thursday afternoon.

According to the police report, a witness caught three people stealing a backflow preventer from outside Walgreen's, located at 100 North Timberland Drive. The witness got the license plate number as the trio drove off in a Mitsubishi. At around the same time, a Lufkin Police detective happened to be driving by and the witness flagged him down and told him what they saw.

The detective called in the vehicle description and license plate number and an officer happened to see the vehicle on First Street, according to the report.

The officer stopped the vehicle and found two backflow preventers. Police arrested Joe E. Jurden, 24, of Humble, Craig Allen Randall, 26, of Kennard, and Ashley Brook Waddell, 23, of Huffman.

Police learned the second backflow preventer had been taken from Chen's Restaurant, located at 1903 S. First St.
