Images from a war, through the eyes of a photographer who was there, an exhibit being show in Shreveport now, is the work of an East Texas Vietnam veteran.
The exhibit called In the Shadow of Danger being shown at the Norton art gallery in Shreveport, shot by then 23-year-old Army Photographer Bob Spangler of Longview.
"I held on to everything I brought back from Vietnam with the hope that someday showing them somewhere. I like to say this is a 40 year past due thank you to the veterans of the Vietnam war," says Spangler.
With the 196th infantry brigade, Spangler saw the realities of war and the different way soldiers were treated then, and now.
"It's really a great reception for troops coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan, that wasn't the case back during the Vietnam war. They were just answering their country's call to duty, they were spit on they were ridiculed called baby killers," he says.
The exhibit shows the day to day life of a soldier, and the quiet honor with which they served.
"It shows life on the fire bases, the helicopters. Trying to bring some honor and some recognition to the veterans of Vietnam. Most vets have pushed Vietnam to a back corner of their mind and they haven't talked about it for 40 years," Spangler says.
The hurt is still there, Spangler chokes when he talks of the vets that see his photo's.
"A veteran recently I sat down with, for the first time he sat down and spoke for a couple of hours about Vietnam," he says.
And for Spangler himself, a chance to heal old wounds.
"Its been our prayer that god would use these pictures to minister and heal wounds. Pull those demons out of the backs of their minds and deal with it once and for all," says Spangler.
'In the shadow of danger' will be on display at the 'R.W. Norton' art gallery at 4747 Creswell Avenue in Shreveport until October 14.
Spangler says he may bring the exhibit to Longview for an event in February of next year.
