The tragic details surrounding Border Patrol agent Nick Ivie's death continue to unfold. Investigators are now calling it a "friendly fire" situation. But what about all those politicians who spoke out right after he died? Are they changing their tune now that we know what investigators say really happened?
"We are looking into the possibility it was a tragic accident. The result of friendly fire," said Customs and Border Protection Joint Field Cmdr. Jeff Self.
The investigation into Ivie's death took an unexpected turn Friday as officials announced it's likely he was killed by one of his own. Since that announcement, most of Arizona's politicians have been about as quiet as the investigators in this case.
But earlier this week when officials said they believed Ivie died at the hands of a suspected smuggler, state and federal leaders had a lot to say. CBS 5 News received statements from nearly a dozen officials, most along the same lines as what Gov. Jan Brewer had to say.
"I am angry. We have been dealing with this issue of getting our borders secure now for many years and still we are told that it's more secure than ever. Unfortunately, today Arizona is seeing and hearing that results of our border not being secure," Brewer said.
Brewer also said a political stalemate and the federal government's failures put Ivie in harm's way. Even after hearing the friendly fire announcement, Brewer said she stands by her statement.
"When our secretary of Homeland Security keeps telling the Congress that the border is secure and that we don't need to spend any more money to secure it that this obviously contradicts assertions by her and the president," said U.S. Sen. John McCain.
So far McCain hasn't spoken out since the new developments.
At least one lawmaker has, U.S. Rep. Ron Barber initially sent out a statement that read in part, "This is a powerful reminder that our borders are far from secure. We cannot cede one foot of American soil to these cross border bandits."
Since Friday's announcement Barber released another statement that read, "Friday's development that Border Patrol Agent Nicholas Ivie may have been the victim of an accidental shooting in no way diminishes the heroism and bravery exhibited by him and his fellow agents as they patrolled a dangerous drug smuggling corridor in the dark of night last Tuesday."
