Family fights for justice after loved one killed in tragic hit and run

Posted: Updated:

A family seeks justice for a loved one whose life was taken in a tragic hit and run accident.

It happened back in April on Hwy 64 East, just six miles outside of Tyler.

The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a warrant for Edwardo Viramontes of Ben Wheeler. KLTV obtained a mug shot of Viramontes taken in 1995 from a DWI arrest.

Officials said Viramontes was driving the truck that killed 65-year-old Jacky Johnston.

Surveillance video shows Viramontes failing to stop after striking Johnston on his motorcycle. The sparks seen in the surveillance video are from Viramontes' truck dragging Johnston's bike several hundred feet.

On Saturday, family and friends of Johnston gathered to raise money for a reward for any information that could lead to Viramontes' arrest.

"It's a shame that such a tragedy could have an affect on children. I can handle it as a man, but my children miss their grandpa too," said Johnston's son, Kody Johnston.

"The emptiness and the void in our hearts can't be replaced by anything," said Johnston's sister-in-law, Rhonda Allen.

The family said what they need now is justice.

Benefit organizers said they raised $12,000 that will go to whoever leads authorities to Viramontes.
