A new app available for voters in Texas

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Election day is less than two weeks away. Texans now have a new app to help them stay educated about this year's election. This is the state's first app to ever be used for voting information.

The smart tx voter app features several different tools. East Texans can use this free app to find polling locations in their county. You can also check to make sure you are a registered voter by simply providing your name or drivers license number. Also, you can schedule a reminder to vote and find out when early voting is in your county. Plus,  if you want your friends to vote, you can send them a reminder.

"Smart Texas Voter" allows you to stay informed on the election through Facebook and Twitter. The app can be viewed in English and Spanish, and it gives you the option to ask the Texas Secretary of State any questions you may have about voting.

This app will be beneficial to voters in East Texas.

Thelma "Midget" Sherman, Texas Tax Assessor Collector, said "If at the last minute you're one of those that just forget to go vote that day, then you can go run to your polling place by looking on your smart phone and finding out where to go and being able to vote within minutes from your home more than likely."

Many Texans are wondering how this app will get more voters to the poll.

"Our younger generations are on top of it you know, so because of that I feel like the smart phones and this new way of getting the information out to them will be wonderful for the election," Sherman said.

The app helps voters keep up with the election by providing a countdown until November 6.

If you don't have a smart phone, there are several other ways to stay up to date on elections.

"If you don't have a smart phone, you can still call the tax office,"

Sherman said.

"You can still go online and look it up on the Secretary of State's web site or you can look on the county web site and get the information where you need to go vote."
