Freedom Fighters: Tyree Gui Wells

Tyree Wells joined the U.S. Army in 1948 at the age of 17. One of 16 children, Wells was looking for a better life out of poverty.

He eventually found that better life, but not before spending over three years as a prisoner of war.

Wells and his 24th infantry were among the first troops sent to Korea when the North Koreans crossed the 38th parallel into South Korea in June of 1950.

The young infantrymen soon found out that war was a far cry from training.

Wells realized he might not be coming back and he almost didn't.

It was on Thanksgiving Day that massive intervention by Chinese communist forces changed the course of the war and the course of Wells' life.
