Lufkin car-motorcycle accident results in 1 injured person, 1 arrest

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A car-motorcycle collision in front of the Jack in the Box on S. Denman Avenue resulted in the cyclist being taken to a local hospital and the car's driver being arrested for driving without a license and failure to yield right of way from a private drive Tuesday afternoon.

The motorcycle rider was identified as Curtis Smith, but condition is not known at this time. He was transported to Memorial Hospital. In addition, no information was available on whether or not he was wearing a helmet when the accident occurred.

Witnesses at the scene said that Smith was turning right from the access road to head south on Denman Avenue, or Highway 69 south. At the same time, the Chrysler Sebring driven by Thomas Franklin Hopson pulled out of the Jack in the Box to cross over the median to Denman Avenue.

One witness said Hopson failed to yield to oncoming traffic because he only looked right. The motorcycle struck the Sebring on the driver's side.

A Lufkin Police officer arrested Hopson at the scene. He was transported to the Angelina County Jail in the back of the LPD officer's squad car.
