SAN AUGUSTINE, TX (KTRE) -
When the San Augustine Wolves ran out onto the field at Wolf Stadium last Friday night, they were hoping it was the last time.
If a new bond proposal passes in tomorrow's election, their hopes will be reality.
Wolf stadium would be demolished to make way for a new facility that will have expanded seating, a new filed house and a track; something the current facility is missing.
"We believe it will be the nicest Class A stadium in East Texas," said Walter Key, San Augustine ISD Superintendent.
Key is behind the 5 million dollar bond and says it beneficial to the students and will not raise the current tax rate.
key also added that this proposed bond would replace an older bond... saving taxpayers an estimated 2 million dollars and would be paid off in 5 years instead of the 25 years agreed on in the 2007 bond.
The facility will not only be used for the school but will also be a vital resource for the community.
"This is going to be a great community project, for folks to come out here and walk our track, and our "Relay for Life" for breast cancer, a lot of different community things will happen out here," said Key.
Fans of the wolves also agree.
"Well, we need a new stadium. This is old; it's been here for years," said Ellis Mcgown.
Mcgown knows first-hand; he says it was the late 60's when he played for the Wolves on the same field. He believes the time has come for something new.
"I think it's time to make a change," said Mcgown.
Tuesday's election will determine if other residents agree.
