PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 19-year-old Phoenix man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony second-degree murder in connection with the 2011 beating of an 84-year-old man collecting aluminum cans from the suspect's backyard.

Da Nguyen, who spoke only Vietnamese, was collecting the cans in the same neighborhood where he and suspect, Charles Nathan Williams, lived on Sept. 12, 2011, according to a court document.

Nguyen was in the gated back yard of the Williams house near Baseline Road and 17th Avenue when a younger brother who was in the bathroom heard sounds, looked out a window and saw the victim outside collecting cans before alerting his older brother.

The younger brother told Williams the man didn't speak English and went out to meet the victim. He was able to get the man to leave the backyard and he was met in the front yard by Williams, who struck him in the face, according to the document.

A neighbor who saw the man on the ground called police.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for multiple facial fractures and had his jaw wired shut. He was taken to a care facility and died Sept. 28, 2011, from complications of his facial injuries, the document states.

An emergency room doctor told police the victim appeared to have been hit more than once.
