Trinity Police: 'Big Texas Heat' started with homemade video

TRINITY, TX (KTRE) -

They're a small East Texas police department with big personalities and the officers at the Trinity Police Department are soon to be the stars of a new TV show on CMT - "Big Texas Heat."

East Texas News found out how the idea of a reality show based on the Trinity Police department got started.

The small town of Trinity, Texas - population, 2,697 - may soon be a household name. "Big Texas Heat" follows the Trinity Police Department through their day-to-day activities and showcases their big personalities, flair for practical jokes, and love of law enforcement.

"Strangely, some people took interest in our small department, and they liked us, and they liked our personalities, and they wanted to show the world," Steven Jones, the Trinity PD chief, said.

Jones said there has been a lot of speculation around town about how the show got started, and he was more than happy to clear up the rumors.

"We did a little homemade video," Jones said.  "Sgt. Wheeler edited it, and we sent it off in the mail, and the next thing you know, everything sparked from there. The show had a very simple beginning."

Sergeant Randy Wheeler says he was just talking with a music buddy about how much he liked his job and how funny everybody was - simple as that.

"I asked the chief one day, ‘What do you think about doing a reality show?' and about 2 ½ years later and a lot of red tape, here we go," Wheeler said.

Officer Felix Morales, aka "the Rookie," said the show has been a life-changing experience for him.

"To know you're on a TV show, it throws you back a little bit, and you're like, ‘Wow I can't believe this is happening to me because it doesn't happen every day to everybody," Morales said.

All of the officers agreed that the filming of the show has brought them closer together as a department and as friends, but nobody was afraid to admit the show still makes them a little anxious.

"I'm really nervous. I don't know how they're going to portray us," Wheeler said.

Jones said he allowed his officers to "have the freedom of just being themselves, do what they do," and added they had "a lot of fun" in the process.

The Trinity PD chief said "Big Texas Heat" is something he never even imagined would have come along and hopes everyone will enjoy seeing a lighter side to law enforcement.

"Big Texas Heat" premieres Saturday at 9:30 p.m. on CMT.
