Longview students pay tribute to Cristian Monreal

Posted: Updated:

Longview High School students, faculty, and family paid tribute Friday to Cristian Monreal.

Cristian was killed Wednesday when the truck he was riding in flipped on Alpine Road in Longview.

We found out that he had more friends than he ever knew. We spoke with one of them who was traveling with Christian's group

Leticia Castanon and some other friends spent most of day with Cristian Monreal on Wednesday with no idea it was his last. They were in three different vehicles and heading back to school.

"One of them took the loop. We took Airline with them and we saw dust behind us but we didn't think it was them. If so I would have told her to stop and turn back around. But our mind was to get back to school on time because of athletics period," Leticia said.

"And when he never showed up, a cop passed by on the loop, and we were just playing around and we were like he's probably going to get a ticket for speeding. An ambulance passed by and it just kind of clicked. I was like, remember the dust that I was talking about?" Leticia relayed.

"We get in the car and we go and we just see everybody laying out there and we try to run to them but the officers don't let us. They hold us back. And you could see Cristian, and you're praying that it's not real. Cristian was a great friend. He always plays around. We were just talking about senior pranks. He was so excited about this pep rally. He'll be a great guardian angel because, like I said, he was a great friend. He touched so many of us. He was so young. We love him so much," Leticia recalled.

Leticia added they were just trying to get to soccer practice on time.

The other three in the truck suffered non-life threatening injuries and are now out of the hospital.
